Why dealers lowball older cars

A dealership makes money selling newer cars with financing and warranties. A 2004 Corolla on their lot doesn't help them, so when you trade one in, they price it at wholesale auction value minus their handling costs and margin — often hundreds or thousands below what the car is actually worth to a direct buyer.

Online buyers are even stricter. Most won't purchase vehicles beyond a certain age or kilometre threshold, period. You fill out their form and get a rejection instead of a price.
